Heart burn & osteoporosis link!

A recent study published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) found a significant link between osteoporosis and long-term use of certain antacids.  The researchers found that people who took antacids (of the proton-pump-inhibitors type) for 7+ years had a significantly higher risk of an osteoporosis fracture. People who took these antacids for as little as 5 years had a significantly higher risk of hip fractures (not necessarily linked to osteoporosis).

Why is this?

One explanation is that the antacids lower and inhibit the secretion of stomac acid. Stomach acid is critical to break down and absorb nutrients including calcium.  Therefore people who take antacids for an extensive period of time can significantly affect their body's absorption of calcium and therefore increase their risk of osteoporosis.

Do you take antacids?  If so here's what I recommend you do:

1.  Find out if your medication is a proton-pump-inhibitor. Visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_pump_inhibitor to see the list of medications that fall in this group.

2.  Controling stomach acid is ALL about diet, so you can COMPLETELY reverse your stomach acid issue if you learn about your diet.  Contact us now to set up a free consultation if you'd like.
