You can avoid the swine flu

There is a LOT of media coverage of the swine flu, and most of it sounds very scary.  It makes you feel like there's nothing much you can do, other than avoiding a trip to Mexico! 

So far this flu is proving to be VERY treatable and the mortality rate is not greater than the regular flu. The best chance anybody has of beating any flu, including the swine flu, is by strengthening their immune system. The last real global pandemic was the 1918 Spanish Influenza and although it killed millions of people, millions others contracted the flu but did not die. Why? Their immune systems were stronger.

Your immune system works BETTER THAN ANY DRUG. Period.

If your immune system is not strong then you'll surely have a harder time overcoming any flu.  So here's what you can do to strengthen your immune system immediately:

1. Eliminate refined sugar and processed foods.  These are NON-foods. They weaken your immune system and they unbalance the healthy bacteria in your gut. This bacteria is your immune system's artillery. They're your first line of defense.

2. Eat tons of RAW fresh vegetables and fruit. The more raw foods you eat, the more nutrients you'll get and the more tools and weapons you'll give your body to work with.

3. Increase your vitamin-D levels.  One of the reasons summer is not flu season is because we get plenty of sun which optimizes our vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is proven to be the single most important vitamin to boost your immune system. So you need to get about 10 minutes of daily sun exposure on your skin without sunblock. Sunblock also inhibits the production of vitamin D.

4. Take a probiotic. As mentioned in recommendation #1, the health of your intestinal flora is key to having a strong immune system.  If you want to be sure you are fully arming your body for a strong defense I recommend taking an "enteric-coated" probiotic. Enteric coating ensures that the contents of the capsule are delivered to your gut and not dissolved by stomach acid.

5. Take an Omega-3 supplement. You can take flax oil, krill oil or fish oil. It is also important to avoid trans-fats as well as cooked vegetable oils (such as in fried foods) which seriously weaken your body's defenses.

6. Positive thinking. It has been proven that negative thoughts weaken the immune system whereas positive ones strengthen it. So boost your immunity by thinking positively about your life and knowing that you are healthy. Giving in to fearful thoughts will weaken you.

7. Eat lots of raw and cooked garlic. Garlic is one of the most potent anti-viral and anti-bacterial foods. Just eat garlic and you'll have nothing to worry about. People may start walking away from you, but hey... with the threat of a "pandemic" that can be a good thing too! :)

8. Get really good sleep and manage your stress. Your body cannot be healthy if it is stressed or sleep deprived. The functions that help your body heal can only be turned on when you are not stressed and when you have at least 6 hours of good quality deep continuous sleep.

Follow the CDC tips to prevent contracting the virus:

  • Wash your hands often and/or use anti-bacterial hand sanitizers
  • Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick
  • Use face masks like the ones nurses and docs use (available at the drug store)

Dr. Mehmet Oz also had an interesting tip -if not a bit socially awkward- : use hand sanitizing wipes after shaking someone's hand. It can be a little weird, and in my opinion, it can be reflective of a fear you have of getting sick and I think you're more likely to get sick if you're paranoid about it.  BUT, if it helps you feel and know that you're doing everything in your power and there is NO way in the world you can get sick, then by all means do it.
