Tea Tree and MRSA
MRSA is short for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus. It is a deadly bacteria that causes many infections in hospitals and has been known to be spread through gym equipment and salons. The infection does not respond to antibiotics and causes thousands of deaths per year. For instance, in the U.S. in 2005 the deaths attributed to MRSA were over 18,000, whereas HIV/AIDS killed 17,000 that same year. It's that serious a problem.
A new study is testing whether the findings from preliminary research hold true. It had been observed that tea tree oil soaps removed MRSA from skin.
